About the icon
St. Gobnait (Irish), the Gentle Saint
Gobnait founded a community of women at Ballyvourney in County Cork, where, tradition says, she settled on finding nine white deer grazing as a sign. She is associated with bees, which she kept, and with healing, and her holy well and grave remain places of pilgrimage. Her feast on 11 February is kept by Irish faithful and by Orthodox Christians who honour the early saints of the British Isles. Painted entirely by hand in tempera, this original is set on a recessed panel with a 24k gold leaf background.
