About the icon
The Abbess of Kildare and Patroness of Ireland
Brigid founded a monastery at Kildare in the fifth or sixth century, which grew into a great centre of prayer and learning. Stories of her life dwell on her open-handed charity and her gift for bringing peace. The woven rush cross that bears her name is still made on her feast and hung in homes for blessing. With Saints Patrick and Columba she is a patron of Ireland, celebrated on 1 February. Painted entirely by hand in tempera, this original is set on a recessed panel with a 24k gold leaf background.
