About the icon
The Prince
The ancient story of Barlaam and Ioasaph tells of Ioasaph, son of King Abenner of India, who was raised in a palace shielded from all sorrow. The hermit Barlaam came to him and taught him the Gospel through parables, and the prince was baptised. In time he brought his father to faith, then renounced the kingdom to live as a hermit beside his teacher. He is commemorated on 26 August in the Greek calendar. Painted entirely by hand in tempera, this original is set on a recessed panel with a 24k gold leaf background.
