About the icon
The Enlightener and Equal to the Apostles
Ivan Kasatkin came to Hakodate in 1861 as a young priest serving the Russian consulate, learned the language and culture deeply, and began quietly teaching the faith. Over half a century he built up a living Japanese Church, translated the Scriptures and services into Japanese and raised the Cathedral of the Resurrection in Tokyo, still known as Nikolai-do. He reposed as archbishop in 1912 and is commemorated on 3 February. Painted entirely by hand in tempera, this original is set on a recessed panel with a 24k gold leaf background.
This is a 100% Handwritten artwork crafted according to Byzantine technique and style, totally painted by hand with 24 karats Gold Leaves background. Once the theme is painted by our skilled craftsmen, a mounting point and the Certificate of Authenticity and Quality are installed at the back of the icon.
