About the icon
The Bishop of Cyrene
Educated in Alexandria, Synesius was a philosopher, poet and public figure of Cyrenaica before he was chosen bishop of Ptolemais around 410. His letters and hymns, which survive, show his care for his people in a troubled time and his search to unite learning with faith. Icons show him in a bishop's vestments, holding the Gospel. His icon is often chosen by those named Synesios. Painted entirely by hand in tempera, this original is set on a recessed panel with a 24k gold leaf background.
