About the icon
The removal of Jesus Christ' body from the Cross after His Crucifixion
After Christ died, Joseph of Arimathea asked Pilate for His body, and with Nicodemus took it down from the Cross. The icon shows the Lord's body being lowered as the Theotokos embraces Him and Saint John and the myrrh-bearing women mourn. The Descent from the Cross is enacted at Vespers on Holy Friday, when the figure of Christ is removed from the Cross and wrapped in linen. This Museum Edition faithfully reproduces the icon on a flat panel, its background laid by hand in 22k gold leaf.
This is an authentic icon crafted according to Byzantine technique and style. All parts are made by hand and only the theme is reproduced using Premium Museum Standards Technique.
Once the wood panel is cut to the desired dimensions, our skilled craftsmen meticulously apply the 22 karats Gold Leaves on the background. Then the theme is directly printed on the prepared surface, resulting to an exquisite work of art.
At the back of the icon, a mounting point is installed, accompanied by our Certificate of Authenticity and Quality. All of our artworks bear the studio’s distinctive title and logo.
A thorough quality inspection takes place before we secure the package with durable protective materials to ensure safe delivery.
