About the icon
Akra Tapeinosis, The Man of Sorrows
Known in Greek as Akra Tapeinosis, this icon shows Christ after His death, His eyes closed and arms crossed, standing upright in the tomb with the Cross behind Him. It contemplates the depth of the humility to which God descended for our salvation, while hinting at the life hidden in His death. It is venerated especially during Holy Week and is often found in the niche of the Prothesis in churches. This Museum Edition faithfully reproduces the icon on a raised panel, its background laid by hand in matte gold leaf.
This is an authentic icon crafted according to Byzantine technique and style. All parts are made by hand and only the theme is reproduced using Advanced Museum Standards Technique.
Once the natural wood panel is cut to the desired dimensions, our skilled craftsmen meticulously apply the Matte Gold Leaves on the background. Then the theme is directly printed on the prepared surface, resulting to an exquisite work of art.
At the back of the icon, a mounting point is installed, accompanied by our Certificate of Authenticity and Quality. At the small sized icons a stand is also available. All of our artworks bear the studio’s distinctive title and logo.
A thorough quality inspection takes place before we secure the package with durable protective materials to ensure safe delivery.

Of the many representations of Christ Extreme Humility, this one from Agiografia is striking for its simplicity and grace. The contemplative quality of this Icon is remarkable. All Icons invite us to participate, but this one also moves us to linger in awe.
As a repeat customer I find the consistent, high quality of Agiografia products is well worth the price. I'm grateful to have found this studio, and I highly recommend it.
