The Evangelist | Apostle of Ethiopia
Called Levi in the Gospels of Mark and Luke, Matthew was sitting at the tax office in Capernaum when Jesus said to him, 'Follow me', and he rose and followed, later welcoming Christ to a meal with many sinners. His Gospel shows Christ as the fulfilment of the prophets. Tradition says he preached in distant lands, including Ethiopia. He is commemorated on 16 November. This Museum Edition faithfully reproduces the icon on a flat panel, its background laid by hand in 22k gold leaf.
This is an authentic icon crafted according to Byzantine technique and style. All parts are made by hand and only the theme is reproduced using Premium Museum Standards Technique.
Once the wood panel is cut to the desired dimensions, our skilled craftsmen meticulously apply the 22 karats Gold Leaves on the background. Then the theme is directly printed on the prepared surface, resulting to an exquisite work of art.
