About the icon
Angel of the desert
This type shows the Forerunner with wings, recalling the prophecy of Malachi in which God sends His messenger, angelos in Greek, before the Lord, and honouring John's angelic life of fasting in the wilderness. He wears a garment of camel's hair and usually holds a scroll calling to repentance; often an axe lies at the root of a tree and his severed head rests in a dish. His Synaxis is kept on 7 January. This Museum Edition faithfully reproduces the icon on a carved panel, its background laid by hand in matte gold leaf.
This is an authentic icon crafted according to Byzantine technique and style. All parts are made by hand and only the theme is reproduced using Advanced Museum Standards Technique.
Once the natural wood panel is cut to the desired dimensions, our skilled craftsmen meticulously apply the Matte Gold Leaves on the background. Then the theme is directly printed on the prepared surface, resulting to an exquisite work of art.
