About the icon
Portaitissa of Mt. Athos
Tradition tells that in the time of Iconoclasm a widow of Nicaea placed the icon in the sea to save it, and it later appeared on the waves off Athos, upright in a pillar of light. The monk Gabriel walked on the water to receive it. When the monks placed it in the church, it moved itself above the gate. Its arrival is celebrated on Bright Tuesday. This Museum Edition faithfully reproduces the icon on a raised panel, its background laid by hand in matte gold leaf.
This is an authentic icon crafted according to Byzantine technique and style. All parts are made by hand and only the theme is reproduced using Advanced Museum Standards Technique.
Once the natural wood panel is cut to the desired dimensions, our skilled craftsmen meticulously apply the Matte Gold Leaves on the background. Then the theme is directly printed on the prepared surface, resulting to an exquisite work of art.
At the back of the icon, a mounting point is installed, accompanied by our Certificate of Authenticity and Quality. At the small sized icons a stand is also available. All of our artworks bear the studio’s distinctive title and logo.
