About the icon
The New Martyr and Righteous Youth
Born in Orenburg to a Russian mother and a German father and raised in the Orthodox faith in Munich, Alexander Schmorell co-founded the White Rose resistance group, writing leaflets that called Germans to oppose Nazi tyranny. Arrested in 1943, he went to his execution with calm faith. He was glorified by the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia in 2012 and is commemorated on 13 July, the day of his death. Painted entirely by hand in tempera, this original is set on a recessed panel with a 24k gold leaf background.
