About the icon
The Glorious Prophet & Forerunner
John had reproved King Herod for taking Herodias, his brother's wife. At a birthday feast her daughter danced before Herod and, prompted by her mother, asked for John's head on a platter; Herod, bound by his oath, gave the order. The icon shows the Forerunner bowing beneath the executioner's sword, often with his head laid in a dish. The feast falls on 29 August and is kept as a strict fast day. This Gallery Print reproduces the icon on a flat panel with an aged gold foil finish.
