About the icon
The Elder of Mount Athos
Born on the island of Paros, Joseph went to Mount Athos as a young man and lived in remote huts and caves with a small brotherhood, devoting himself to the Jesus Prayer, vigil and strict fasting. His disciples went on to restore several Athonite monasteries and to found others far beyond Greece, and his letters on prayer are widely read. He reposed on the feast of the Dormition in 1959 and is commemorated on 16 August. This Museum Edition faithfully reproduces the icon on a recessed panel, its background laid by hand in 18k gold leaf.
This is an authentic icon crafted according to Byzantine technique and style. All parts are made by hand and only the theme is reproduced using Advanced Museum Standards Technique.
Once the natural wood panel is cut to the desired dimensions, our skilled craftsmen meticulously apply the 18 karats Gold Leaves on the background. Then the theme is directly printed on the prepared surface, resulting to an exquisite work of art.
At the back of the icon, a mounting point is installed, accompanied by our Certificate of Authenticity and Quality. All of our artworks bear the studio’s distinctive title and logo.
A thorough quality inspection takes place before we secure the package with durable protective materials to ensure safe delivery.
