About the icon
The Great Martyr, Wonderworker and Shepherd
Born in prison to Christian parents who died for the faith, Mamas was raised in Caesarea of Cappadocia and as a youth lived as a shepherd in the mountains, where wild beasts grew tame around him. He was martyred under the emperor Aurelian. The traditional icon shows him seated on a lion, holding a lamb and a shepherd's staff. He is commemorated on 2 September and honoured as a protector of shepherds. This Museum Edition faithfully reproduces the icon on a flat panel, its background laid by hand in 22k gold leaf.
This is an authentic icon crafted according to Byzantine technique and style. All parts are made by hand and only the theme is reproduced using Premium Museum Standards Technique.
Once the wood panel is cut to the desired dimensions, our skilled craftsmen meticulously apply the 22 karats Gold Leaves on the background. Then the theme is directly printed on the prepared surface, resulting to an exquisite work of art.
