About the icon
Panagia Soumela, Protectress of Pontos
Tradition holds that the icon, attributed to the Evangelist Luke, was brought to Mount Mela in Pontus by the monks Barnabas and Sophronios, who founded the monastery there. When the Greeks of Pontus left in 1923 the icon was hidden, then recovered and brought to Greece, and since 1951 it has been kept at the new Panagia Soumela on Mount Vermion. Thousands gather there for the Dormition on 15 August. In this Silver Relief the icon is presented in gold-plated silver relief on a panel.
This is an authentic Silver Plated artwork with Gold details, crafted according to Byzantine technique and style. The theme is reproduced using Advanced Museum Standards Technique.
