About the icon
Panagia Soumela, Protectress of Pontos
Tradition holds that the icon, attributed to the Evangelist Luke, was brought to Mount Mela in Pontus by the monks Barnabas and Sophronios, who founded the monastery there. When the Greeks of Pontus left in 1923 the icon was hidden, then recovered and brought to Greece, and since 1951 it has been kept at the new Panagia Soumela on Mount Vermion. Thousands gather there for the Dormition on 15 August. This Museum Edition faithfully reproduces the icon on a raised panel, its background laid by hand in matte gold leaf.
This is an authentic icon crafted according to Byzantine technique and style. All parts are made by hand and only the theme is reproduced using Advanced Museum Standards Technique.
Once the natural wood panel is cut to the desired dimensions, our skilled craftsmen meticulously apply the Matte Gold Leaves on the background. Then the theme is directly printed on the prepared surface, resulting to an exquisite work of art.
At the back of the icon, a mounting point is installed, accompanied by our Certificate of Authenticity and Quality. All of our artworks bear the studio’s distinctive title and logo.
A thorough quality inspection takes place before we secure the package with durable protective materials to ensure safe delivery.
